He was one of five Haitians to be included in the V Biennal in Cuenca, Ecuador in 1996. One of his paintings is featured on the cover of the bestseller The mmaculate Invasion by Bob Shacochis (New York: Viking, 1999). He was included in the Biennale of Venice "Milk of dreams " in 2022. By the time he was six years old, both of his parents had died and he was raised, in meager circumstances, by his godmother. By age 14 he was apprenticed to a carpenter and then to a bricklayer but finally he became a house painter. At the end of 1963 he went to work as a houseboy at the German Embassy in Port-au-Prince. Soon after, he did his first painting and showed it to the wife of the Ambassador, Mdme. Malsy-Minsk. Eventually he took his paintings to the Galerie Monnin, with which he was associated in 1973, and rapidly became a favorite of collectors worldwide. He won first prize in the “Masters of the Dew” painting competition in 1978. In the early 1980's Gerard Paul moved to the United States where he eventually stopped painting altogether. He comes from a family of painters - Denis Smith, Antoine Smith, Jocelyne Smith dit Oceli… . Smith is part of the second generation of the Saint-Soleil Movement. In 1973, he started working under the direction of Jean Claude Garoute (Tiga) and with his cousin Saint-Jacques Smith. Three of his nine children – Wagner, Juler and Flambert – became painters. In 1977, Smith along with 33 member of the Saint Soleil Movement were invited to participate in the Festival of Theater in Nancy, by Jacque Lang, the French Minister of Culture. In 1979, he and 12 members of the Saint Soleil movement went to Poland to participate in an international seminar on theater and voudou organized by Maud Robart and Tiga with Jerzy Gratowski. He studied art in the Dominican Republic. In 1935/6, he settled in Port-au-Prince, where, with Petion Savain and a few others, he was one of the rare painters in Haiti before the opening of the Centre d'Art. He participated in the 1939 World's Fair with Savain. As one of the original members of the Centre d'Art he exhibited in a number of their group exhibitions. Amiama died in 1969.
