At the "Centre d' Art," he worked under the supervision of Rigaud Benoit who thought him the elementary principals of pictorial art. He became a teacher the following year. Dewitt Peters, founder of Centre d' Art, made him chief of the studio. Later he became a member/founder of the "Foyer des Arts Plastiques" In 1957, he was named director of the museum of Beaux-Arts of Port au Prince. In 1953, Cedor received the Labor Department Exhibition Prize and in 1957, the Grand Work Prize of the Haitian Office of Tourism. He exhibited globally. Emilcar Similien, (Simil) - Biography and Works for Sale Emilcar Similien, (Simil) ( Haitian, born 1944 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Simil was born Emilcar Similien in St. Marc, Haiti on August 28, 1944. He completed his primary school studies at Frere Herve, the Christian Brothers School in St. Marc, in 1958, and continued his education at the Lycee Toussaint Louverture in Port-au-Prince. In 1965, he entered the Academie des Beaux Arts in Port-au-Prince to study sculpture and painting. According to his longtime friend and dealer, Michel Monnin, at this time that Simil began a deep dialogue with Professor Montaguelli who besides teaching him art, also imparted to him “a certain attitude toward art; constancy of effort and the research necessary to find beauty." In his fifth year at the Academy, Simil became an assistant professor, teaching courses in Art History. He also worked with Georges Hector at "Coumbite 67." Around this time he created a seven foot marble sculpture of Christ which was placed at the sacred vodou site, Saut-d'eau, with a commemorative plaque. Simil is an avant-garde intellectual who is interested in many things; He is an accomplished musician; he plays the violin and the slide trombone. As a child, he completed a correspondence course in art from the Ecole ABC in Paris and in 1963 enrolled in the Atelier d'art of Joseph Jacob, where his instructors were Dieudonne Cedor, David La Fontant and Bernard Wah. Shortly after, one of his paintings was chosen for the Esso Competition. By 1966, Carlo left the group. Jasmin Joseph - Biography and Works for Sale Jasmin Joseph ( Haitian, 1924 - 2005 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Jasmin Joseph, born 23 November 1923, in Grande Riviere in northern Haiti, was working in a brick factory and sculpting in clay when his work was noticed by American sculptor Jason Seeley an American sculptor who partnered with Dewitt Peters – a watercolorist — to establish the Centre D’Art in Port-au-Prince. Encouraged by Seeley, he joined the Centre d' Art in 1948 where he practiced sculpture and painting. In the early 1950s he contributed to a mural depicting "The Stations of the Cross" and created a choir screen of open-sculpted terra cotta for the Episcopal Cathedral of Ste Trinité. [Destroyed in the earthquake of January 2010.] He abandoned sculpture after finding that unauthorized molds had been made of some of his terra cotta work and copies were being sold to profit the thief. He painted exclusively after that. Jasmin Joseph died in 2005. Gérard Paul - Biography and Works for Sale Gérard Paul ( Haitian, born 1943 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Gerard Paul was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on October 9, 1943. By the time he was six years old, both of his parents had died and he was raised, in meager circumstances, by his godmother. By age 14 he was apprenticed to a carpenter and then to a bricklayer but finally he became a house painter. At the end of 1963 he went to work as a houseboy at the German Embassy in Port-au-Prince. Soon after, he did his first painting and showed it to the wife of the Ambassador, Mdme. Malsy-Minsk. Eventually he took his paintings to the Galerie Monnin, with which he was associated in 1973, and rapidly became a favorite of collectors worldwide. He won first prize in the “Masters of the Dew” painting competition in 1978. In the early 1980's Gerard Paul moved to the United States where he eventually stopped painting altogether. He was introduced to drawing by photographer and artist René Vincent, then a professor at the Lycee Philippe Guerrier of Cap-Haitien. He created the pseudonym Jagal to sign his drawings in pencil and watercolors. Jacques Gabriel moved permanently to Port-au-Prince in January 1967. From 1967 to 1969 he joined the Faculty of Law and Economics (eSDS) of the State University of Haiti (UEH) while also studying accounting at the School of American Commerce. He chose to discontinue there in order to begin studying Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Sciences (FDS) in October 1969. He also audited courses in aesthetics and freehand drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts and the current National School of Arts (ENARTS). Jacques graduated in Civil Engineering in July 1973. In 1975, he joined the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communications (MTPTC) as Engineer of Roads Service and rose through the ranks to the position of Chief Executive Officer (1995-2001), then Minister (September 2008 to October 2011). From 1945 to 1950, Lazard studied painting and sculpture at the Centre d’ Art. There he studied painting and sculpture under Dewitt Peters, Borno and Mangones. He exhibited in 1945 in Havana, Cuba and also participated in 1946 at the group exhibit held by "Unesco" at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. In 1950 he founded the Foyer des Arts Plastiques with Cedor, Price etc. A year later, in 1951, he received a scholarship and moved to Paris where he studied for two years. In 1953, he moved back to Haiti. From 1953 to 1956 he exhibited at the French Institute in Mexico, the Zegri Gallery in New York and the Condado Beach Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Luckner is the founder of the "Brochette" Gallery in 1956 with Dieudonne Cedor, Nehemy Jean and Roland Dorcely. He emigrated from Haiti in 1967 to the USA. Luckner Lazard died in 1998. Jean-Rene's family belonged to the elite of Haitian society, which enabled him to become an actor, singer and a dancer. He moved to Port-au-Prince where he attended the "Petit Seminaire College Saint Martial" and later the "College Moderne." He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Port-au-Prince. In 1963, he became a "regular" at the Brochette Galerie. Two years later in 1965, he won first prize in the Esso Salon Competition. In1968, he decided to devote himself entirely to painting and opened a studio in Port-Au-Prince. In 1970, he visited the USA; a year later he returned to the USA and stayed there for four months, studying and working with Bernard Sejourne’. From 1973 to 1975 he taught fine arts at the school of Fine Arts in Port-au-Prince. He founded the School of Beauty with B. Sejourne’, Legagneur and Dodard. In 1985, he founded the "Ateliers Jerome" where his own paintings and the work of other artists are exhibited. Jerome belongs to the School of Beauty Jean Rene Jerome died suddenly in 1991. He joined the Centre d'Art in 1951. For decades, he worked in a small room on the ground floor of the Galerie Issa on the Rue du Chile in Port-au-Prince. Normil is married to the painter Francoise Elliassaint.His works often showcased scenes of Hatian festivals, rural lifen and symbolic themes as Noah' s Artk, Paradise, and Carnival, using bold colors and meticulous composition. He habitually puts three dots in a triangular pattern near his signature. The dots shows that he is a freemason. Hia art was widely exhibited in United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy.
