He comes from a family of painters - Denis Smith, Antoine Smith, Jocelyne Smith dit Oceli… . In 1973, he started working under the direction of Jean Claude Garoute (Tiga) and Maude Robart. In 1977, Smith was invited to participate in the Festival of Theater in Nancy, by Jacque Lang, the French Minister of Culture. In 1979, he and 12 members of the Saint Soleil movement went to Poland to participate in an international seminar on theater and voudou organized by Maud Robart and Tiga with Jerzy Gratowski. Sisson Blanchard - Biography and Works for Sale Sisson Blanchard ( Haitian, 1926 - 1981 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Sisson Blanchard was born in 1929 in the southern Haitian village of Trouin, a small village in the mountains of southern Haiti. He came to Port-au-Prince as a young man and got a job as a yardboy in the house of Joel and Ethel Kenter (friends of DeWitt Peters), who owned the Hotel Mon Reve on the Champs de Mars. He began painting in 1948, with the encouragement of the American sculptor Jason Seley and DeWitt Peters. Blanchard's paintings were first shown at the Centre d'Art, and have since been exhibited all over the world. His son, Smith Blanchard also became a prominent Haitian painter. Wilson Bigaud - Biography and Works for Sale Wilson Bigaud ( Haitian, 1931 - 2010 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Wilson Bigaud was discovered by Dewitt Peters as early as 1946 who discouraged him from continuing work in clay. At the Art Center, he worked under Maurice Borno. He studied with the legendary Hector Hyppolite, for whom he mixed paints. In 1950, he won the second prize at an international exhibit in Washington, D.C. He completed his “Marriage at Cana,” one of the finest of the famed Episcopal Cathedral of Sainte Trinite murals, in 1951 and later two additional murals, “Heaven” and “Hell.” Bigaud suffered from acute depression most of his life and endured a series of nervous breakdowns between 1957 and 1961. He then retired from the Port-au-Prince art scene, at the age of 30, continuing to paint in Petit-Goâve, a provincial town devastated by the 2010 earthquake, the year of Bigaud's death. With Prefete Duffault, Bigaud is considered a first generation Haitian Master, a member of the artist group founded by Hector Hyppolite. He first worked in clay before becoming a painter. Denis grew up in Haiti but later moved to Paris, France, where he lived for several years. In 1960, he studied in the Haitian School of Surrealists and published his first collection of poetic works, Idem, under the pseudonym of DAVERTIGE. At Fourteen, he began painting with help from Casimir Laurent, Dieudonné Cédor, and Luckner Lazard. In 1956, he became strongly influenced by Max Pinchinat and turned toward European techniques. He studied art in the Dominican Republic. In 1935/6, he settled in Port-au-Prince, where, with Petion Savain and a few others, he was one of the rare painters in Haiti before the opening of the Centre d'Art. He participated in the 1939 World's Fair with Savain. As one of the original members of the Centre d'Art he exhibited in a number of their group exhibitions. Amiama died in 1969. She was age 50 when she came to Soissons la Montagne to cook for the Saint Soleil group. She was one of the founding members of the celebrated Saint-Soleil community of artists in Soisson-la-Montagne, along with Prospere Pierre-Louis, Dieuseul Paul, Denis Smith, and Levoy Exil. Saint Fleurant was known for her clay sculptures as well as her paintings. She eventually left in 1978, becoming a cook again and painting on the side. She was the mother of Saint-Soleil artists Magda Magloire , Ramphis Magloire and the late Stivenson Magloire . Louisiane St. Fleurant passed away on June 1st, 2005. He was married to Erzulien, a community worker who later became an artist. In 1972, Madsen Mompremier came to Port-au-Prince, where he worked as a tailor. In 1973 he started to paint as a student of Gerard Valcin. Originally, Mompremier painted delightful scenes of everyday Haitian life, peasants in their villages and cane fields. Around 1975 he found a style which he has now been refining for more than thirty years; painting Voudou Gods with great majesty and precision. Since 1979, he has exhibited his work in Italy, France and the United States. In 1982 he had two shows at the Haitian Art Co. - one of his own work and one featuring a sculpture collaboration with Nacius Joseph. Mompremier lives in Florida.
