    Gesner Armand - Biography and Works for Sale Gesner Armand ( Haitian, 1936 - 2008 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Gesner Armand was born on June 11, 1936 in Croix-des-Bouquets. He started his career at the age of fourteen in 1956, at the Haitian Art Center where he studied drawing under the supervision of Maurice Borno and watercolor with Pierre Monosiet. In 1956, he stopped painting in watercolors and learned oil painting. "Petit Garçon," his best conceived and balanced paintings realized at that time, constitutes all his work at that time. From 1958-60, he lived and studied in Mexico where he took ceramic and sculpture classes at "Talleres de Artesianas." Armand returned to Haïti in 1960 and left shortly afterward to Paris with a scholarship from the French Government where he lived for two years, until 1962. There he exhibited his painting with those of other Haiti artists such as Jacques Gabriel, Hervé Télémaque and other Latin American painters. When he returned to Haïti in 1962, he settled in Croix-des-Bouquets and served as Director of the Museum of Haitian Art at St. Pierre’s College. In 1984, Armand became the director of the Museum of Haiti Art of College St. Pierre after the death of Pierre Monosiet. He remained in that post until 1992. In 1986, he worked for two months at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts beside other artists, writers and composers. His compilation of poems entitled "L'autre bord" edited by Les Editions Mémoires was published in 1992. Gesner Armand passed away June 10, 2008 after an extended illness. He came to Port-au-Prince as a young man and got a job as a yardboy in the house of Joel and Ethel Kenter (friends of DeWitt Peters), who owned the Hotel Mon Reve on the Champs de Mars. He began painting in 1948, with the encouragement of the American sculptor Jason Seley and DeWitt Peters. Blanchard's paintings were first shown at the Centre d'Art, and have since been exhibited all over the world. His son, Smith Blanchard also became a prominent Haitian painter. At the Art Center, he worked under Maurice Borno. He studied with the legendary Hector Hyppolite, for whom he mixed paints. In 1950, he won the second prize at an international exhibit in Washington, D.C. He completed his “Marriage at Cana,” one of the finest of the famed Episcopal Cathedral of Sainte Trinite murals, in 1951 and later two additional murals, “Heaven” and “Hell.” Bigaud suffered from acute depression most of his life and endured a series of nervous breakdowns between 1957 and 1961. He then retired from the Port-au-Prince art scene, at the age of 30, continuing to paint in Petit-Goâve, a provincial town devastated by the 2010 earthquake, the year of Bigaud's death. With Prefete Duffault, Bigaud is considered a first generation Haitian Master, a member of the artist group founded by Hector Hyppolite. He first worked in clay before becoming a painter. She was age 50 when she came to Soissons la Montagne to cook for the Saint Soleil group. She was one of the founding members of the celebrated Saint-Soleil community of artists in Soisson-la-Montagne, along with Prospere Pierre-Louis, Dieuseul Paul, Denis Smith, and Levoy Exil. Saint Fleurant was known for her clay sculptures as well as her paintings. She eventually left in 1978, becoming a cook again and painting on the side. She was the mother of Saint-Soleil artists Magda Magloire , Ramphis Magloire and the late Stivenson Magloire . Louisiane St. Fleurant passed away on June 1st, 2005. His mother sold vegetables and his father was in the local police force. As a child he recalls working in his mother’s garden. In the 1970s he did domestic work, including cooking, in the houses of the elite of Petionville and as a pastry chef there. He began to paint in the early 1980's. He is completely self-taught. His paintings found a receptive audience among diplomats, journalists and other expatriates in Port-au-Prince, and soon he was taken on by the legendary gallery-owner Issa el-Saieh.
