Jacques Enguerrand Gourgue - Biography and Works for Sale Jacques Enguerrand Gourgue ( Haitian, 1930 - 1996 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Jacques-EnguerrandGourgue was born in Port-au-Prince in 1931.He was the son of a French psychiatrist and a Haitian mambo or voodoo priestess. He began painting when barely out of primary school, and quickly achieved world-renowned status. Gourgue's mother is said to have been a mambo, or priestess of voudou. Having had a turbulent and troubled childhood, he turned to painting and joined the Centre d'Art in 1947, when he was 17.Gourgue lived in Spain with a Spanish wife and daughter. At the age of 17, his work was exhibited in the Museum of Modern art in New York; his painting "The Magic Table" is in the Museum's permanent collection. In 1949, at the age of 18, he won the Gold Medal at the exposition for the Port-au-Prince Bicentennial. Throughout most of the latter half of the twentieth century his work has been almost continuously exhibited in prestigious shows in Europe, North America, and Latin America, including important sales at the New York fine art auction houses Sotheby’s and Christies. He adopted his own style of painting, instantly distinguishable, featuring the Haitian mountains, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, and vodou symbolism in an almost surrealistic manner. Gerard Valcin - Biography and Works for Sale Gerard Valcin ( Haitian, 1925 - 1988 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Gerard Valcin was born to poor parents in 1925 in Port-au-Prince. His father was an artist who started Valcin painting when he was 22. Valcin worked as a tile-setter until he joined the Centre d'Art in 1950 with the encouragement of Dewitt Peters. He is credited with bringing his half-brother Pierre-Joseph Valcin to the Centre in the early 1960's. He is the uncle of Favrange Valcin, who paints under the name Valcin II. Several artists, including Madsen Mompremier, Dieudonne Rouanez, and Louis Joseph, have studied with him. Valcin is considered one of the most significant of Haiti's second generation painters along with Wilmino Domond and André Pierre . He died May 15, 1988. Exhibits 2012 Kafou: Haiti, Art and Vodou. Wilson Bigaud - Biography and Works for Sale Wilson Bigaud ( Haitian, 1931 - 2010 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Wilson Bigaud was discovered by Dewitt Peters as early as 1946 who discouraged him from continuing work in clay. At the Art Center, he worked under Maurice Borno. He studied with the legendary Hector Hyppolite, for whom he mixed paints. In 1950, he won the second prize at an international exhibit in Washington, D.C. He completed his “Marriage at Cana,” one of the finest of the famed Episcopal Cathedral of Sainte Trinite murals, in 1951 and later two additional murals, “Heaven” and “Hell.” Bigaud suffered from acute depression most of his life and endured a series of nervous breakdowns between 1957 and 1961. He then retired from the Port-au-Prince art scene, at the age of 30, continuing to paint in Petit-Goâve, a provincial town devastated by the 2010 earthquake, the year of Bigaud's death. With Prefete Duffault, Bigaud is considered a first generation Haitian Master, a member of the artist group founded by Hector Hyppolite. He first worked in clay before becoming a painter. She was age 50 when she came to Soissons la Montagne to cook for the Saint Soleil group. She was one of the founding members of the celebrated Saint-Soleil community of artists in Soisson-la-Montagne, along with Prospere Pierre-Louis, Dieuseul Paul, Denis Smith, and Levoy Exil. Saint Fleurant was known for her clay sculptures as well as her paintings. She eventually left in 1978, becoming a cook again and painting on the side. She was the mother of Saint-Soleil artists Magda Magloire , Ramphis Magloire and the late Stivenson Magloire . Louisiane St. Fleurant passed away on June 1st, 2005. His mother sold vegetables and his father was in the local police force. As a child he recalls working in his mother’s garden. In the 1970s he did domestic work, including cooking, in the houses of the elite of Petionville and as a pastry chef there. He began to paint in the early 1980's. He is completely self-taught. His paintings found a receptive audience among diplomats, journalists and other expatriates in Port-au-Prince, and soon he was taken on by the legendary gallery-owner Issa el-Saieh.
