  • About Us | Haiti Collection Privée

Discover the story behind our Haitian Art Gallery. Learn more about us, our mission, and how to get in touch. Find out what sets Haiti Collection Privée apart! About Us Haiti Collection Privée was born from the desire to pay homage to the artists, history and culture of Haiti and aspires to enhance the knowledge and appreciation thereof. Haiti is a small Creole and French-speaking country in the heart of the Caribbean is dominated by an extraordinarily creative spirit and exceptional imaginations. Despite the natural disasters, poverty, economic distress, and socio-political instability which marked the country for a long time, the soul and imagination of its inhabitants are extremely fertile and uncontaminated. Haiti, the first Black Republic in the world, has created its own identity while merging the cultural elements of two continents: Europe and Africa. The indigenous paintings exemplify this creative effort - both the search for a new identity as well as an attachment to the local traditions and African roots. Voodoo is a fundamental element of Haitian life, culture, inspiration and artistic creation. This form of religion, or spirituality, provides the faithful a contact with the supernatural while it offers relief and shelter against a life and, very often, bitter reality. Collecting has been much more than a simple hobby. It has been a passion and cultural experience. Art allowed me to access and assimilate the Haitian spirit and values. The Haitian paintings and sculptures included in this gallery are all part of my personal collection. Each piece was selected and purchased with the enthusiasm and delight of the collector. Many of the pieces on display are the fruit of lengthy and passionate research. The meetings and conversations with the artists of Haiti remain an unforgettable experience. The opportunity to meet such unique individuals furthered my interest in collecting these pieces of art. The collection presents an occasion to showcase, through art, the peculiar history and struggles of Haiti. I would like to thank all artists that I had the pleasure to meet during my residence in Haiti. They have been an example of faith, strength and determination. All of them, in different ways, are very dear to me. One special thought on an artist and teacher whose name is Tiga - the most spiritual and sensitive person I have ever met: The time spent enjoying his company, in Turgeau, has been extremely precious. He taught my daughter to approach life freely with art, using all the senses, listening to the sound of the drums and connecting with her heart. Feel free to reach out to us with questions or comments about our gallery and fine art collection.

He started his career at the age of fourteen in 1956, at the Haitian Art Center where he studied drawing under the supervision of Maurice Borno and watercolor with Pierre Monosiet. In 1956, he stopped painting in watercolors and learned oil painting. "Petit Garçon," his best conceived and balanced paintings realized at that time, constitutes all his work at that time. From 1958-60, he lived and studied in Mexico where he took ceramic and sculpture classes at "Talleres de Artesianas." Armand returned to Haïti in 1960 and left shortly afterward to Paris with a scholarship from the French Government where he lived for two years, until 1962. There he exhibited his painting with those of other Haiti artists such as Jacques Gabriel, Hervé Télémaque and other Latin American painters. When he returned to Haïti in 1962, he settled in Croix-des-Bouquets and served as Director of the Museum of Haitian Art at St. Pierre’s College. In 1984, Armand became the director of the Museum of Haiti Art of College St. Pierre after the death of Pierre Monosiet. He remained in that post until 1992. In 1986, he worked for two months at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts beside other artists, writers and composers. His compilation of poems entitled "L'autre bord" edited by Les Editions Mémoires was published in 1992. Gesner Armand passed away June 10, 2008 after an extended illness.
