Micius Stephane - Biography and Works for Sale Micius Stephane ( Haitian, 1912 – 1996 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Micius Stephane was born in 1912 in Bainet, on the Caribbean coast of Haiti. He worked as a cobbler and amateur sculptor. He joined the Centre d'Art in 1946 at the encouragement of DeWitt Peters, subsequently moving to Port-au-Prince in 1956. Between 1961 and 1979, Stephane exhibited in the U.S. and Europe. He is credited with having brought Edger Jean-Baptiste to the Centre d’Art. His son, Peters Stephane, and his daughter, Edith Stephane, are also painters. Stephane passed away in 1996. Sisson Blanchard - Biography and Works for Sale Sisson Blanchard ( Haitian, 1926 - 1981 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Sisson Blanchard was born in 1929 in the southern Haitian village of Trouin, a small village in the mountains of southern Haiti. He came to Port-au-Prince as a young man and got a job as a yardboy in the house of Joel and Ethel Kenter (friends of DeWitt Peters), who owned the Hotel Mon Reve on the Champs de Mars. He began painting in 1948, with the encouragement of the American sculptor Jason Seley and DeWitt Peters. Blanchard's paintings were first shown at the Centre d'Art, and have since been exhibited all over the world. His son, Smith Blanchard also became a prominent Haitian painter. From 1945 to 1950, Lazard studied painting and sculpture at the Centre d’ Art. There he studied painting and sculpture under Dewitt Peters, Borno and Mangones. He exhibited in 1945 in Havana, Cuba and also participated in 1946 at the group exhibit held by "Unesco" at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. In 1950 he founded the Foyer des Arts Plastiques with Cedor, Price etc. A year later, in 1951, he received a scholarship and moved to Paris where he studied for two years. In 1953, he moved back to Haiti. From 1953 to 1956 he exhibited at the French Institute in Mexico, the Zegri Gallery in New York and the Condado Beach Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Luckner is the founder of the "Brochette" Gallery in 1956 with Dieudonne Cedor, Nehemy Jean and Roland Dorcely. He emigrated from Haiti in 1967 to the USA. Luckner Lazard died in 1998. He began painting when barely out of primary school, and quickly achieved world-renowned status. Gourgue's mother is said to have been a mambo, or priestess of voudou. Having had a turbulent and troubled childhood, he turned to painting and joined the Centre d'Art in 1947, when he was 17.Gourgue lived in Spain with a Spanish wife and daughter. At the age of 17, his work was exhibited in the Museum of Modern art in New York; his painting "The Magic Table" is in the Museum's permanent collection. In 1949, at the age of 18, he won the Gold Medal at the exposition for the Port-au-Prince Bicentennial. Throughout most of the latter half of the twentieth century his work has been almost continuously exhibited in prestigious shows in Europe, North America, and Latin America, including important sales at the New York fine art auction houses Sotheby’s and Christies. He adopted his own style of painting, instantly distinguishable, featuring the Haitian mountains, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, and vodou symbolism in an almost surrealistic manner. He was married to Erzulien, a community worker who later became an artist. In 1972, Madsen Mompremier came to Port-au-Prince, where he worked as a tailor. In 1973 he started to paint as a student of Gerard Valcin. Originally, Mompremier painted delightful scenes of everyday Haitian life, peasants in their villages and cane fields. Around 1975 he found a style which he has now been refining for more than thirty years; painting Voudou Gods with great majesty and precision. Since 1979, he has exhibited his work in Italy, France and the United States. In 1982 he had two shows at the Haitian Art Co. - one of his own work and one featuring a sculpture collaboration with Nacius Joseph. Mompremier lives in Florida. His mother sold vegetables and his father was in the local police force. As a child he recalls working in his mother’s garden. In the 1970s he did domestic work, including cooking, in the houses of the elite of Petionville and as a pastry chef there. He began to paint in the early 1980's. He is completely self-taught. His paintings found a receptive audience among diplomats, journalists and other expatriates in Port-au-Prince, and soon he was taken on by the legendary gallery-owner Issa el-Saieh.
