Luckner Lazard - Biography and Works for Sale Luckner Lazard ( Haitian, 1928 - 1998 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Luckner Lazard was born in Port-au-Prince on July 7, 1928. From 1945 to 1950, Lazard studied painting and sculpture at the Centre d’ Art. There he studied painting and sculpture under Dewitt Peters, Borno and Mangones. He exhibited in 1945 in Havana, Cuba and also participated in 1946 at the group exhibit held by "Unesco" at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. In 1950 he founded the Foyer des Arts Plastiques with Cedor, Price etc. A year later, in 1951, he received a scholarship and moved to Paris where he studied for two years. In 1953, he moved back to Haiti. From 1953 to 1956 he exhibited at the French Institute in Mexico, the Zegri Gallery in New York and the Condado Beach Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Luckner is the founder of the "Brochette" Gallery in 1956 with Dieudonne Cedor, Nehemy Jean and Roland Dorcely. He emigrated from Haiti in 1967 to the USA. Luckner Lazard died in 1998. Beauvoir was a member of the Centre d' Art. He later left the Centre d’Art to become a member of the Foyer des Arts Plastiques, which was formed by those artists who were dissatisfied with the way issues facing Haitian artists were addressed. Jean-Rene's family belonged to the elite of Haitian society, which enabled him to become an actor, singer and a dancer. He moved to Port-au-Prince where he attended the "Petit Seminaire College Saint Martial" and later the "College Moderne." He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Port-au-Prince. In 1963, he became a "regular" at the Brochette Galerie. Two years later in 1965, he won first prize in the Esso Salon Competition. In1968, he decided to devote himself entirely to painting and opened a studio in Port-Au-Prince. In 1970, he visited the USA; a year later he returned to the USA and stayed there for four months, studying and working with Bernard Sejourne’. From 1973 to 1975 he taught fine arts at the school of Fine Arts in Port-au-Prince. He founded the School of Beauty with B. Sejourne’, Legagneur and Dodard. In 1985, he founded the "Ateliers Jerome" where his own paintings and the work of other artists are exhibited. Jerome belongs to the School of Beauty Jean Rene Jerome died suddenly in 1991. He joined the Centre d'Art in 1951. For decades, he worked in a small room on the ground floor of the Galerie Issa on the Rue du Chile in Port-au-Prince. Normil is married to the painter Francoise Elliassaint.His works often showcased scenes of Hatian festivals, rural lifen and symbolic themes as Noah' s Artk, Paradise, and Carnival, using bold colors and meticulous composition. He habitually puts three dots in a triangular pattern near his signature. The dots shows that he is a freemason. Hia art was widely exhibited in United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy. Payas is predicator of the Baptist Church of Soissons, a church that fights against the "satanic cult of voodoo." Under the influence of the"spirits" and the "voice" of Prosper coming from the "unknown." Payas began to paint and in January 1997; his art is influenced by late noted Saint-Soleil artist, Prospere Pierre-Louis. He presented his first design to Tiga. He later became a mechanic and then worked at painting and construction. When he was around fifty, he met Tiga, the founder of the Saint Soleil art community in the mountains above Port-au-Prince, and became one of the first members of the group. Antilhomme and other members of the San Soleil School of artists, came home from parties and painted the events, not as they they saw them, but how they experienced the event, filtered through the homemade liquors, ecstatic dancing, and songs. He named for his grandmother, Celestina, a practitioner of vodou who was an important influence in his life. Wilmino Domond took Celestin Faustin as an apprentice when he was 19 years old to train him. Faustin learned quickly and established himself independently. He died tragically in 1981 (age 33). He started his career at the age of fourteen in 1956, at the Haitian Art Center where he studied drawing under the supervision of Maurice Borno and watercolor with Pierre Monosiet. In 1956, he stopped painting in watercolors and learned oil painting. "Petit Garçon," his best conceived and balanced paintings realized at that time, constitutes all his work at that time. From 1958-60, he lived and studied in Mexico where he took ceramic and sculpture classes at "Talleres de Artesianas." Armand returned to Haïti in 1960 and left shortly afterward to Paris with a scholarship from the French Government where he lived for two years, until 1962. There he exhibited his painting with those of other Haiti artists such as Jacques Gabriel, Hervé Télémaque and other Latin American painters. When he returned to Haïti in 1962, he settled in Croix-des-Bouquets and served as Director of the Museum of Haitian Art at St. Pierre’s College. In 1984, Armand became the director of the Museum of Haiti Art of College St. Pierre after the death of Pierre Monosiet. He remained in that post until 1992. In 1986, he worked for two months at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts beside other artists, writers and composers. His compilation of poems entitled "L'autre bord" edited by Les Editions Mémoires was published in 1992. Gesner Armand passed away June 10, 2008 after an extended illness.
