At the "Centre d' Art," he worked under the supervision of Rigaud Benoit who thought him the elementary principals of pictorial art. He became a teacher the following year. Dewitt Peters, founder of Centre d' Art, made him chief of the studio. Later he became a member/founder of the "Foyer des Arts Plastiques" In 1957, he was named director of the museum of Beaux-Arts of Port au Prince. In 1953, Cedor received the Labor Department Exhibition Prize and in 1957, the Grand Work Prize of the Haitian Office of Tourism. He exhibited globally. He completed his primary school studies at Frere Herve, the Christian Brothers School in St. Marc, in 1958, and continued his education at the Lycee Toussaint Louverture in Port-au-Prince. In 1965, he entered the Academie des Beaux Arts in Port-au-Prince to study sculpture and painting. According to his longtime friend and dealer, Michel Monnin, at this time that Simil began a deep dialogue with Professor Montaguelli who besides teaching him art, also imparted to him “a certain attitude toward art; constancy of effort and the research necessary to find beauty." In his fifth year at the Academy, Simil became an assistant professor, teaching courses in Art History. He also worked with Georges Hector at "Coumbite 67." Around this time he created a seven foot marble sculpture of Christ which was placed at the sacred vodou site, Saut-d'eau, with a commemorative plaque. Simil is an avant-garde intellectual who is interested in many things; He is an accomplished musician; he plays the violin and the slide trombone. His parents were farmers. Lafortune worked in agriculture until 1958, when he was initiated as a houngan and decorated the outside of his Temple with images of the Lwa. He began formal painting in 1972 upon being given painting materials such as masonite by Pierre Monosiet, Director of the Museum of Haitian Art at the College of St. Pierre. As a child, he completed a correspondence course in art from the Ecole ABC in Paris and in 1963 enrolled in the Atelier d'art of Joseph Jacob, where his instructors were Dieudonne Cedor, David La Fontant and Bernard Wah. Shortly after, one of his paintings was chosen for the Esso Competition. By 1966, Carlo left the group. He later left that school to work full time for "SNEM" (national Service for the Eradication of Malaria), then he opened his own barber shop, painting as a hobby. In 1974, he followed Ludovic Booz's advice to return to painting full time and painted mostly historical scenes before becoming a "miniaturist." He was the son of a general in the Haitian army. He studied at Freres de l' instruction Chretienne. In his twenties, he earned a living as a carpenter and shipbuilder. A visit to the Centre d' Art in 1948 convinced him to become a painter. In Jacmel, he studied under Fernand Jean Louis. In 1955, he joined the Centre d' Art where he worked under other greats in to mature his technique. His works are known for their vivid "blue-green" palettes and mystical portrayals of Haitian life, often depicting landscapes, rural scenes, and elements of daily life. He was inspired by the paintings in the gallery. His studies at the Art Center began in 1978. In 1978 he was included in the show, "Five Vodou Artists" at the Institute Francais in Port-au-Prince. In early 1981 Camy lived near the sea in the Carrefour neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. While preparing a solo show for the Galerie Monnin he disappeared when swimming. He comes from a family of painters - Denis Smith, Antoine Smith, Jocelyne Smith dit Oceli… . Smith is part of the second generation of the Saint-Soleil Movement. In 1973, he started working under the direction of Jean Claude Garoute (Tiga) and with his cousin Saint-Jacques Smith. Three of his nine children – Wagner, Juler and Flambert – became painters. In 1977, Smith along with 33 member of the Saint Soleil Movement were invited to participate in the Festival of Theater in Nancy, by Jacque Lang, the French Minister of Culture. In 1979, he and 12 members of the Saint Soleil movement went to Poland to participate in an international seminar on theater and voudou organized by Maud Robart and Tiga with Jerzy Gratowski. His father was a farmer and his mother a marchande . Orphaned at age 16, he left for Port-Au-Prince two years later. He learned cabinet-making and was the maintenance man for the Evangelist Mission. His brother Charles, was a painter, but Audes says he was not influenced by him. He began to paint in 1970, beginning with rural scenes. In 1974 he began to paint dogs, a species that he loves. In 1975 several of his paintings were chosen by Andre Malraux and Jean-Marie Drot for an exhibition in Paris and Auxerre, and were reproduced for an article in Vogue magazine.
