He attended the Lycee Petion, and then the Lycee Toussaint Louverture. He became interested in art as a young boy, and started to paint in earnest in his early 20’s, under the tutelage of his uncle Emmanuel Ducasse. He was also influenced by the works of the Saint Soleil group. His work is much sought after by collectors of Haitian art worldwide. Later he became a member/founder of the "Foyer des Arts Plastiques" In 1957, he was named director of the museum of Beaux-Arts of Port au Prince. In 1953, Cedor received the Labor Department Exhibition Prize and in 1957, the Grand Work Prize of the Haitian Office of Tourism. He exhibited globally. His father was an artist who started Valcin painting when he was 22. Valcin worked as a tile-setter until he joined the Centre d'Art in 1950 with the encouragement of Dewitt Peters. He is credited with bringing his half-brother Pierre-Joseph Valcin to the Centre in the early 1960's. He is the uncle of Favrange Valcin, who paints under the name Valcin II. Several artists, including Madsen Mompremier, Dieudonne Rouanez, and Louis Joseph, have studied with him. Valcin is considered one of the most significant of Haiti's second generation painters along with Wilmino Domond and André Pierre . He died May 15, 1988. Exhibits 2012 Kafou: Haiti, Art and Vodou. In 1930, he moved to Croix-des-Missions, on the outskirts of the capital, with an uncle which was a farmer and an active vodou practitioner. Here in about 1947 he was introduced to American writer film-maker Maya Deren, who had admired his temple wall paintings. She introduced Pierre to the Centre d' Art. His paintings are characterized by vivd colors and rich symbolism reflecting Vodou Loas, rituals and mythology. His work is seen as a bridge between religious practise and visual storytelling. Andre Pierre is regarded as one of Haiti's most iconic artists. When “Saint-Soleil” disbanded, Pierre-Louis organized the group, “Cinq Soleils” with Levoy Exil, Denis Smith, Dieuseul Paul and Louisiane Saint Fleurant. Jasmin Joseph - Biography and Works for Sale Jasmin Joseph ( Haitian, 1924 - 2005 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Jasmin Joseph, born 23 November 1923, in Grande Riviere in northern Haiti, was working in a brick factory and sculpting in clay when his work was noticed by American sculptor Jason Seeley an American sculptor who partnered with Dewitt Peters – a watercolorist — to establish the Centre D’Art in Port-au-Prince. Encouraged by Seeley, he joined the Centre d' Art in 1948 where he practiced sculpture and painting. In the early 1950s he contributed to a mural depicting "The Stations of the Cross" and created a choir screen of open-sculpted terra cotta for the Episcopal Cathedral of Ste Trinité. [Destroyed in the earthquake of January 2010.] He abandoned sculpture after finding that unauthorized molds had been made of some of his terra cotta work and copies were being sold to profit the thief. He painted exclusively after that. Jasmin Joseph died in 2005. His father was a bus driver and his mother a seamstress. Valcin was raised by the mother of painter Gerard Valcin. He worked as a mechanic, a stone mason, and a plumber before becoming a painter. Valcin began to paint after he was introduced to the Centre d’Art by his half-brother, the late painter Gerard Valcin, in 1959. He joined the center in 1966. Gerard Valcin instructed Pierre-Joseph for his first year at the Centre d’Art. He is the father of painters Favrance Valcin and 'Valcin II.' Valcin is considered one of the most significant of Haiti's second generation painters.
