He began painting when barely out of primary school, and quickly achieved world-renowned status. Gourgue's mother is said to have been a mambo, or priestess of voudou. Having had a turbulent and troubled childhood, he turned to painting and joined the Centre d'Art in 1947, when he was 17.Gourgue lived in Spain with a Spanish wife and daughter. At the age of 17, his work was exhibited in the Museum of Modern art in New York; his painting "The Magic Table" is in the Museum's permanent collection. In 1949, at the age of 18, he won the Gold Medal at the exposition for the Port-au-Prince Bicentennial. Throughout most of the latter half of the twentieth century his work has been almost continuously exhibited in prestigious shows in Europe, North America, and Latin America, including important sales at the New York fine art auction houses Sotheby’s and Christies. He adopted his own style of painting, instantly distinguishable, featuring the Haitian mountains, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, and vodou symbolism in an almost surrealistic manner. He began to paint in 1961, working with Gerard Resil, Dieudonne Cedor and Luckner Lazard, and on ceramics with Tiga (Jean-Claude Garoute) and Emmanuel Joachim. Descollines painted the scenes of urban social life and took special pleasure in depicting children as they played in the streets. In 1975 he developed a severe allergy to all kinds of paint. In early 1981 Camy lived near the sea in the Carrefour neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. While preparing a solo show for the Galerie Monnin he disappeared when swimming. He was married to Erzulien, a community worker who later became an artist. In 1972, Madsen Mompremier came to Port-au-Prince, where he worked as a tailor. In 1973 he started to paint as a student of Gerard Valcin. Originally, Mompremier painted delightful scenes of everyday Haitian life, peasants in their villages and cane fields. Around 1975 he found a style which he has now been refining for more than thirty years; painting Voudou Gods with great majesty and precision. Since 1979, he has exhibited his work in Italy, France and the United States. In 1982 he had two shows at the Haitian Art Co. - one of his own work and one featuring a sculpture collaboration with Nacius Joseph. Mompremier lives in Florida. Haiti is a small Creole and French-speaking country in the heart of the Caribbean is dominated by an extraordinarily creative spirit and exceptional imaginations. Despite the natural disasters, poverty, economic distress, and socio-political instability which marked the country for a long time, the soul and imagination of its inhabitants are extremely fertile and uncontaminated. Haiti, the first Black Republic in the world, has created its own identity while merging the cultural elements of two continents: Europe and Africa. The indigenous paintings exemplify this creative effort - both the search for a new identity as well as an attachment to the local traditions and African roots. Voodoo is a fundamental element of Haitian life, culture, inspiration and artistic creation. This form of religion, or spirituality, provides the faithful a contact with the supernatural while it offers relief and shelter against a life and, very often, bitter reality. Collecting has been much more than a simple hobby. It has been a passion and cultural experience. Art allowed me to access and assimilate the Haitian spirit and values. The Haitian paintings and sculptures included in this gallery are all part of my personal collection. Each piece was selected and purchased with the enthusiasm and delight of the collector. Many of the pieces on display are the fruit of lengthy and passionate research. The meetings and conversations with the artists of Haiti remain an unforgettable experience. The opportunity to meet such unique individuals furthered my interest in collecting these pieces of art. The collection presents an occasion to showcase, through art, the peculiar history and struggles of Haiti. I would like to thank all artists that I had the pleasure to meet during my residence in Haiti. They have been an example of faith, strength and determination. All of them, in different ways, are very dear to me. In 1930, he moved to Croix-des-Missions, on the outskirts of the capital, with an uncle which was a farmer and an active vodou practitioner. Here in about 1947 he was introduced to American writer film-maker Maya Deren, who had admired his temple wall paintings. She introduced Pierre to the Centre d' Art. His paintings are characterized by vivd colors and rich symbolism reflecting Vodou Loas, rituals and mythology. His work is seen as a bridge between religious practise and visual storytelling.
