His parents were farmers. Lafortune worked in agriculture until 1958, when he was initiated as a houngan and decorated the outside of his Temple with images of the Lwa. He began formal painting in 1972 upon being given painting materials such as masonite by Pierre Monosiet, Director of the Museum of Haitian Art at the College of St. Pierre. He signed his early paintings "Pont Sonde" and his later ones "St. Marc," where he lives now. Exhibits 2012 Kafou: Haiti, Art and Vodou. His father was a bus driver and his mother a seamstress. Valcin was raised by the mother of painter Gerard Valcin. He worked as a mechanic, a stone mason, and a plumber before becoming a painter. Valcin began to paint after he was introduced to the Centre d’Art by his half-brother, the late painter Gerard Valcin, in 1959. He joined the center in 1966. Gerard Valcin instructed Pierre-Joseph for his first year at the Centre d’Art. He is the father of painters Favrance Valcin and 'Valcin II.' Valcin is considered one of the most significant of Haiti's second generation painters. He worked as a cobbler and amateur sculptor. He joined the Centre d'Art in 1946 at the encouragement of DeWitt Peters, subsequently moving to Port-au-Prince in 1956. Between 1961 and 1979, Stephane exhibited in the U.S. and Europe. He is credited with having brought Edger Jean-Baptiste to the Centre d’Art. His son, Peters Stephane, and his daughter, Edith Stephane, are also painters. Stephane passed away in 1996. Chery started painting while working as a barber. He opened a gas station in the Artibonite Valley and exhibited his art at his place of work. On the advice of his friend Philome Obin, he moved to Port-au-Prince in 1951. He stayed there for one year, returning to the Art Center in Port-au-Prince ten years later. In 1965, he entered the Galerie Issa, where he painted for several years. His works were often reproduced in magazines (Time, Vogue), as well as in art books. He exhibited in London (1969), Spoleto (1970), Modena (1981), New York, Milwaukee, Berlin (1979), Paris (1980, 1988, & 1990). His paintings have been sold through Sotheby’s Auction House in New York.
