He studied at St. Louis de Gonzague and the Louis Hall Institute. Noted artists Luce Turnier, Maurice Borno and Lucien Price tutored him. Later he became a draftsman for UNICEF in Haiti. In 1956 he received a scholarship to further his art studies in the United States and traveled to New York to work on perfecting his painting technique. His works often portrayed children in playful scenarios, capturing the essence of Haitian childhood with humor and irony. He returned to Haiti in 1978 and settled in Leogane . Emilcar Similien, (Simil) - Biography and Works for Sale Emilcar Similien, (Simil) ( Haitian, born 1944 ) Discover More: Explore Our Curated Showcase or Browse Our Full Haitian Art Gallery Previous Next Simil was born Emilcar Similien in St. Marc, Haiti on August 28, 1944. He completed his primary school studies at Frere Herve, the Christian Brothers School in St. Marc, in 1958, and continued his education at the Lycee Toussaint Louverture in Port-au-Prince. In 1965, he entered the Academie des Beaux Arts in Port-au-Prince to study sculpture and painting. According to his longtime friend and dealer, Michel Monnin, at this time that Simil began a deep dialogue with Professor Montaguelli who besides teaching him art, also imparted to him “a certain attitude toward art; constancy of effort and the research necessary to find beauty." In his fifth year at the Academy, Simil became an assistant professor, teaching courses in Art History. He also worked with Georges Hector at "Coumbite 67." Around this time he created a seven foot marble sculpture of Christ which was placed at the sacred vodou site, Saut-d'eau, with a commemorative plaque. Simil is an avant-garde intellectual who is interested in many things; He is an accomplished musician; he plays the violin and the slide trombone. He comes from a family of painters - Denis Smith, Antoine Smith, Jocelyne Smith dit Oceli… . In 1973, he started working under the direction of Jean Claude Garoute (Tiga) and Maude Robart. In 1977, Smith was invited to participate in the Festival of Theater in Nancy, by Jacque Lang, the French Minister of Culture. In 1979, he and 12 members of the Saint Soleil movement went to Poland to participate in an international seminar on theater and voudou organized by Maud Robart and Tiga with Jerzy Gratowski. He was married to Erzulien, a community worker who later became an artist. In 1972, Madsen Mompremier came to Port-au-Prince, where he worked as a tailor. In 1973 he started to paint as a student of Gerard Valcin. Originally, Mompremier painted delightful scenes of everyday Haitian life, peasants in their villages and cane fields. Around 1975 he found a style which he has now been refining for more than thirty years; painting Voudou Gods with great majesty and precision. Since 1979, he has exhibited his work in Italy, France and the United States. In 1982 he had two shows at the Haitian Art Co. - one of his own work and one featuring a sculpture collaboration with Nacius Joseph. Mompremier lives in Florida. As a child, he completed a correspondence course in art from the Ecole ABC in Paris and in 1963 enrolled in the Atelier d'art of Joseph Jacob, where his instructors were Dieudonne Cedor, David La Fontant and Bernard Wah. Shortly after, one of his paintings was chosen for the Esso Competition. By 1966, Carlo left the group.
