Manes Descollines (1936-1985) was originally a mason and construction worker, then a factory worker at the famous Barbancourt Rum distillery. He began to paint in 1961, working with Gerard Resil, Dieudonne Cedor and Luckner Lazard, and on ceramics with Tiga (Jean-Claude Garoute) and Emmanuel Joachim. Descollines painted the scenes of urban social life and took special pleasure in depicting children as they played in the streets. In 1975 he developed a severe allergy to all kinds of paint. He attempted suicide numerous times. Tragically, he succeeded in ending his life in 1985.
